Mundakkai–Chooralmala: Around 300 Houses Completed in First Phase

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said that around 300 houses along with allied facilities for the victims of the Mundakkai–Chooralmala disaster have been completed and are targeted to be handed over in February as part of the first phase. CM was speaking at a press conference held at the Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram.

The Chief Minister recalled that Kerala entered 2025 amid the shock of the Mundakkai–Chooralmala disaster, at a time when the state was recovering from a major tragedy. CM said Malayalis across the world stood united in solidarity with the affected people. As Kerala now moves into 2026, it does so with a renewed sense of purpose — the fulfillment of providing the disaster-affected families with safe and dignified housing. This achievement, he said, is a moment of pride for every Malayali.

Rehabilitation work for the disaster victims is progressing rapidly at the Elston Estate land near the Kalpetta bypass, which was acquired for resettlement. A modern township comprising 410 houses along with essential facilities is being constructed at the site. Designed to withstand natural disasters, the township will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure while remaining environmentally sustainable and in harmony with nature.

The township has been planned across 35 clusters, each equipped with common spaces for children to play and for elders to gather, ensuring a community-centric and inclusive living environment.
