IFFK 2025 Opens Today With a Global Lineup of 206 Films From 82 Countries

Thiruvananthapuram: The 30th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) lifts its curtain today, bringing eight vibrant days of world cinema to the state capital. A magnificent lineup of 206 films from 82 countries, screened across 16 theatres, promises an exceptional cinematic journey for audiences. The films are categorized into 26 sections, showcasing diverse voices, cultures and cinematic styles.

The festival will be officially inaugurated at 6 PM at the Nishagandhi Auditorium by Minister for Culture Saji Cherian. The ceremony will be chaired by Kerala Chalachitra Academy Vice Chairperson Kuku Parameswaran, with renowned Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín marking his presence as chief guest. Adding international prestige to the event, Palestinian Ambassador Abdullah M. Abu Shawesh and German Ambassador Dr. Philipp Ackermann will attend as distinguished guests.

A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the Spirit of Cinema Award to acclaimed Canadian filmmaker Kelley Fyffe-Marshall. Following the ceremony, the opening film “Palestine 36” will be screened—an evocative portrayal of the Palestinian people’s history and struggle.

The event will also feature several key releases:

  • A book on director Shaji N. Karun, titled “Karunayaude Camera”, will be launched by the Culture Minister.
  • The festival handbook will be unveiled by Spanish actress and jury member Ángela Molina, alongside Vietnamese filmmaker and jury member Bùi Thạc Chuyên.
  • Legendary filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan will release the Daily Bulletin.
  • A special edition of Chalachitra Sameeksha will also be presented during the ceremony.

Celebrating 50 years in cinema, veteran filmmaker Rajiv Nath will be honoured on the occasion. A commemorative book about him, titled “Thanal”, will be released as part of the tribute.

The event will witness addresses by Chief Secretary Dr. Jayathilak, Academy Secretary C. Ajoy, and General Council member Sohan Seenulal, with filmmakers Madhupal and Anil Thomas also taking part.
