In a major move to strengthen data security and curb identity misuse, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a new rule making registration compulsory for all private entities seeking to conduct Aadhaar-based verification.
Under the upcoming framework, hotels, event organisers, service providers, and commercial establishments will no longer be allowed to collect or store photocopies of Aadhaar cards. UIDAI has clarified that such practices pose significant privacy risks and violate provisions of the Aadhaar Act.
Instead, registered entities will be required to use secure, digital modes of identity verification — including QR-code scanning and a dedicated Aadhaar authentication app currently being developed. This shift promises safer, quicker, and completely paperless verification for millions of users.
UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar noted that the initiative aims to enhance privacy protections, ensure responsible use of Aadhaar data, and align verification processes with India’s evolving digital-data protection standards. The move comes as part of a wider push to modernize Aadhaar authentication systems and prevent any potential misuse of citizens’ sensitive information.
Once implemented, the regulation will transform how Aadhaar is verified across the country, offering both greater security and transparency in digital identity management.
