Kerala’s First Underwater Tunnel Set to Slash Travel Time and Costs Between Fort Kochi and Ernakulam

Kochi: Kerala is all set to witness a transportation milestone as the state’s first underwater tunnel is nearing completion, promising to revolutionize commuting between Fort Kochi and Ernakulam.

Once operational, the tunnel will allow passengers to save significant travel time and reduce monthly commuting expenses by an estimated ₹1,500 per person. The project, designed to ease congestion on existing roads and ferry services, will provide a faster, safer, and more reliable route under the backwaters connecting the two key city hubs.

Officials from the Kerala Infrastructure and Development Authority (KINFRA) stated that the tunnel is equipped with modern ventilation, lighting, and safety systems, ensuring smooth and secure passage for vehicles and commuters alike.

“This is not just a tunnel; it’s a step forward in urban mobility for Kochi. It will dramatically reduce daily travel stress and costs, while enhancing connectivity for business and tourism,” said a senior transport official.

The underwater tunnel is expected to transform the commuting experience, strengthen local commerce, and serve as a model for similar infrastructure projects across Kerala.
