New Delhi: The Centre has spent ₹462.58 crore on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign visits between 2021 and 2025, covering engagements across 43 countries, official data reveals. The United States accounted for the largest share of expenditure, with nearly 16% of the total — about ₹74.4 crore — spent on four visits alone. Japan and France followed, each accounting for roughly 9% of the overall outlay. The costliest single trip during the period was the February 2025 visit to France, which amounted to ₹25.5 crore.
Key diplomatic engagements during these visits included participation in the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit, the inauguration of the Indian Consulate in Marseille, the Quad Summit, and an address at the United Nations. A June 2023 US visit cost ₹22.8 crore, while a September 2021 trip to the US amounted to ₹19.6 crore. Over the four-year span, the Prime Minister visited the US, UAE, and Japan four times each; France three times; and the UK, Russia, Brazil, and South Africa twice each. While the government maintains that the overseas engagements are aimed at strengthening India’s global partnerships and strategic interests, opposition parties have questioned the scale of public expenditure involved, reviving debate over the costs of high-level diplomatic travel.
