Under Mumbai’s JJ Hospital, 132-year-old tunnel from British era discovered

At the government-run hospital in Mumbai, a tunnel dating back 132 years was found. During construction of a medical unit at the JJ Hospital in Byculla, Mumbai, which was erected in the British era, a 200-meter tunnel was discovered.

Dr. Arun Rathod, a resident medical officer, stated in a statement to the news agency ANI, “We inspected the nursing college building after receiving a complaint of a water leak. A 132-year-old tunnel was discovered during a construction survey by PWD engineers and security personnel. One end of the tunnel is closed. The 200 meter long tunnel, according to a report from PTI, was discovered beneath a structure that had housed the Sir Dinshaw Manockjee Petit Hospital for Women and Children before being turned into a nursing college.

Lord Reay, the governor of Bombay at the time, lay the cornerstone for the historic structure on January 27, 1890 according to Dr Rathod.

According to hospital dean Dr Pallavi Saple, they have informed the Maharashtra Archaeology Department and the Mumbai collector about the discovery because the building is a historic one. Dr Rathod, who examined the building from the inside, told PTI that it has multiple brick pillars and is 4.5 feet tall. A stone wall surrounds the entryway, he claimed.

They opened a three-foot-by-three-foot aperture that appeared to be a sealed ventilation duct. On both the front and back sides of the building, he claimed, there are numerous such sealed apertures.

It has yet to be confirmed, said Dr. Rathod, but several former hospital personnel claim that a British-era building behind this one has a similar structure underground.

He indicated that although it was simply a supposition at this stage, the two buildings might be joined via a tunnel.

Architectural executive John Adams created the structure that the tunnel was discovered beneath, and it was opened to the public on March 15, 1892. Rathod reported that the construction expense was 1,19,351. Several historic buildings from the British era can be found on the JJ Hospital site. Dr. Saple stated, “We are now preparing to launch a heritage walk across the hospital grounds.”
