Pope Francis broke down in tears while talking about the suffering in Ukraine during a traditional prayer in Rome.
The Pope stopped mid-speech, unable to resume the prayer for around 30 seconds.
“Immaculate Virgin, I would have liked today to bring you the thanksgiving of the Ukrainian people,” Pope Francis said before his voice began to tremble.
A crowd, who had gathered at the Spanish Steps, began to applaud the Pope after realising he was unable to continue.
Eventually, the pontiff regained his composure and delivered the rest of the prayer.
“Ukrainian people, for the peace we have long been asking the Lord for. Instead, I have yet to present you with the supplication of the children, of the elderly, of the fathers and mothers, of the young people of that tormented land.”
