Man escaped from Kuthiravattam nabbed in Karnataka by villagers

Police nabbed a murder accused who escaped from the Kuthiravattam Mental Health Centre on Monday. Narukara native Vineesh was nabbed from Dharmasthala in Karnataka. He boarded a train from Kozhikode to Mangaluru and then travelled to Dharmasthala.

The natives caught him when he allegedly tried to steal a vehicle. He was later handed over to police. Upon receiving intimation, a team of Kerala police left for Dharmasthala. They are expected to return by Tuesday.

Vineesh is accused of murdering Perinthalmanna native Drishya (21), for denying his demand for marriage in June 2021. He allegedly stabbed her in her bedroom. Drishya was a third year undergraduate student in Palakkad.

Vineesh had tried to kill himself while in remand. After showing mental distress, he was shifted to Kuthiravattam centre.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi decried the “chaos” brought on by a flurry of demonstrations led by women following Mahsa Amini’s passing while under the morality police’s care on Wednesday. The people’s demand, according to Raisi, was made clear in a television interview: “Those who participated in the disturbances must be dealt with decisively.” No one is permitted to breach the law and create havoc, he warned, adding that “the safety of the people is the red line of the Islamic republic of Iran.”  The ultraconservative president continued, accusing Iran’s archenemy the United States of fomenting the turmoil and said that “the rival has attacked national unity and seeks to turn people against one other.” Kurdish woman Amini, 22, passed away on September 16, three days after she was detained for allegedly violating Iran’s harsh laws requiring women to wear hijabs and modest attire. In addition to stating that forensics and legal experts will soon provide a final report and that the country had experienced “grief and sorrow” over her passing, Raisi cautioned that “protests are different from riots.” In the largest protests Iran has seen in nearly three years, women courageously torched their headscarves and chopped off their hair while chanting, “Woman, Life, Freedom.” Their actions have inspired similar demonstrations around the world. British-Iranian Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who was imprisoned in Iran for six years, cut her hair in a video posted on the BBC Persian service. According to their attorney Saleh Nikbakht, Amini’s grieving parents have filed a lawsuit, requesting “a comprehensive inquiry” and the disclosure of “all recordings and images” taken of her while she was in prison. One officer allegedly promised to “instil the rules in her and educate her how to wear the hijab and how to dress,” according to a cousin of Amini who lives in Iraq and is a member of a Kurdish nationalist group. Iran’s police command promised to combat the protests, which have erupted for 12 straight nights, “with all their might,” in a crackdown that one rights group claims has already resulted in at least 76 deaths.
