India logs 3,095 new Covid cases, active caseload crosses 15,000-mark

India on Friday saw a single-day rise of 3,095 fresh coronavirus cases, with active caseload crossing the 15,000 mark, according to the Union health ministry data. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 44169711, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.19 per cent.

The toll has risen to 5,30,867 with five deaths — one each reported by Goa and Gujarat and three reconciled by Kerala — in a span of 24 hours.

The active cases now comprise 0.03 per cent of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate has been recorded at 98.78 per cent, according to the ministry data updated at 8am.

This comes after the nation recorded a single-day rise of 3,016 fresh coronavirus cases, the highest in nearly six months. A total of 3,375 cases were recorded on October 2 last year.

According to the ministry website, 220.65 crore Covid vaccine doses have been administered under the nationwide drive so far.

Ashok Gehlot may not resign as Chief Minister

In light of the uncertainty surrounding his potential candidacy for Congress president, Ashok Gehlot’s meeting with Sonia Gandhi was postponed by one day. His travel arrangements were originally set for this evening, but he continued postponing the meeting as he spoke with his closest allies, who firmly hinted that he would not be leaving his Rajasthan job anytime soon. After holding a conference on law and order at his house tonight, he finally conveyed word that he would go for Delhi and meet with the Congress president the next day. Digvijaya Singh, according to rumours, is a new contender for Congress president. He is now competing against Shashi Tharoor, who was the first to proclaim his intention to run. When he was in the lead, Ashok Gehlot kept everyone on their toes. “Ashok Gehlot will serve as the Congress’s leader. We never talked about his resignation. He is not leaving now and he won’t go in the future “said Pratap Singh Kachariyawas, a state minister. Vishvendra Singh, another minister, stated: “Mr. Gehlot will finish his five years in Rajasthan.” Many saw Mr. Gehlot’s statements as an indication that he did not want to compete for party president because the Congress forbids anybody from holding two offices. In accordance with the “one person, one post” tenet of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi made it plain last week that Mr. Gehlot could not hold two positions. Although Mr. Gehlot reluctantly consented to run for party president, the current turmoil in the Congress is mostly due to his refusal to step down as Chief Minister of Rajasthan. Over 90 MLAs who support Mr. Gehlot threatened a mass resignation on Sunday after learning that his arch rival Sachin Pilot would take over in Rajasthan if he went on to a national position. The MLAs set forth requirements, including selecting a new Chief Minister only after the Congress president election, in clear defiance of the Gandhis. Given that Mr. Gehlot would have the authority to choose his own successor in Rajasthan, if he were to become the Congress head, that would be a conflict of interest. In the middle of Rahul Gandhi’s “Bharat Jodo Yatra,” the mutiny caused the Congress great embarrassment. The Gehlots were reportedly incensed, and it was widely believed that Mr. Gehlot had abandoned his bid to become the party’s leader. High-ranking party sources, however, said that Mr. Gehlot is “still in competition for the position of Congress president and not ruled out.”
