Hundreds of farmers reach Delhi to take part in ‘mahapanchayat’

To attend “mahapanchayat” organised by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) at Jantar Mantar on Monday, hundreds of farmers from various states began arriving in Delhi amidst tight security measures.

The Delhi Police refuted the claim made by SKM Leaders that farmers were being prevented from travelling to Jantar Mantar in some areas.

“The mahapanchayat is a one-day peaceful event where we will reiterate our demands,” said Abhimanyu Singh Kohar, an SKM (non-political) member and the event’s organiser. “Among other things, we demand a legal guarantee on MSP and the cancellation of the Electricity Amendment Bill 2022.”

But he also said that the police had not yet approved the “mahapanchayat” at Jantar Mantar.

According to Mr. Kohar, farmers travelling from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh were barred from entering Jantar Mantar last night. He claimed that after being taken to Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Rakabganj, and Moti Bagh, they were later released. In order to participate in the “mahapanchayat,” farmers from Punjab, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and some areas of Haryana have already arrived in Delhi, according to Kohar.

The central government, he claimed, had earlier made a commitment to take into account all of our demands during the farmers’ movement, but they had done “nothing.”

So, Mr. Kohar said, “we’re here again to talk about our demands, state them, and plan the movement’s future course of action.
