In the coming months, all states are anticipated to offer Aadhaar membership for infants with birth certificates, going beyond the 16 states that already do, according to government officials quoted by Press Trust of India. Currently, Aadhaar-linked birth registration is available in 16 states. Various states have been added over the course of the process, which started more than a year ago. The government organisation that distributes Aadhaar numbers, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), anticipates that over the next several months, all states will be able to offer the feature, offering further convenience to new parents. Work is currently ongoing in the remaining states. Children under the age of five do not have their biometrics taken. Their UID is processed based on demographic data and a facial image connected to their parent’s UID. Therefore, after the child turns five and fifteen, a biometric update (ten fingers, iris, and facial photos) is necessary. Aadhaar is currently used by more over 1,000 state and federal government programmes to identify and authenticate recipients, distribute benefits, and prevent duplication. Nearly 650 of these programmes are operated by state governments, and 315 are by the federal government; all of them rely on the Aadhaar ecosystem and its biometric authentication. Up to this point, 134 crore Aadhaars have been issued. This 12-digit biometric identification number saw upgrades and enrollments totaling approximately 20 crore last year. 4 crore of these were new enrollments, which includes infants and kids up to age 18. Only 30 lakh of those were enrollments for new adults. According to the sources, the goal is now to make sure that Aadhaar is issued at the moment of birth along with the birth certificate. In relation to this, UIDAI is collaborating with the Registrar General of India. Birth registration must be done electronically, and states with complete computerization have enrolled in the process. It wasn’t possible to find the complete list of states that use Aadhaar-linked birth registration right away.
