Bilkis Bano case: SC to consider hearing plea against grant of remission to 11 convicts

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court consented to take into account a petition that contested the Gujarat government’s decision to pardon 11 defendants in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case.

The arguments made by senior attorney Kapil Sibal and attorney Aparna Bhat against the granting of remission and the subsequent release of the defendants in the case were noted by a bench presided over by Chief Justice N V Ramana.

Only the remission is being contested; the Supreme Court’s ruling is not. My Lords, the Supreme Court’s order is acceptable. According to Sibal, we are contesting the tenets on which remission was granted.

The Gujarat government had previously been requested by the supreme court to consider the remissionary argument.

The Sabarmati Express was attacked in Godhra, where 59 passengers, mostly “kar sewaks,” were burned to death. On March 3, 2002, Bilkis Bano, who was pregnant at the time, was gangraped, and her three-year-old daughter Saleha was one of 14 people killed by a mob.
