20 injured in India-Australia T20 ticket rush

Police said on Thursday that twenty people were hurt in a stampede that occurred when throngs of people flocked to kiosks selling tickets for an India-Australia Twenty20 cricket match in southern India. At the Gymkhana grounds in Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana state, a crowd of cricket fans gathered as the ticket sales began at three counters.

For Sunday’s game, there were around 30,000 people in long lines waiting for just 3,000 tickets, and police were using batons to attempt and keep the throng under control. According to a police official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to reporters, seven of the 20 injured victims were hospitalised in serious condition.

In order to get ready for Australia’s hosting of the T20 World Cup, India will hosting Australia in a three-match T20 series next month.
